“The Pap got an upgrade,” boasts an ad for the Teal Wand, the first at-home, self-collecting cervical cancer screening device approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Most cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Cervical malignancy is less common today thanks to effective HPV vaccines, but screening can detect precancerous cells early, when they’re easier to treat and not yet life-threatening. The Teal Wand’s spongelike tip collects cells to be tested for cancer-causing HPV. Women mail samples to a lab and follow up with their doctors if needed. At-home tests are more private and convenient, especially for folks who can’t access in-person preventive care.
